“HOW TO DRAW A PORTRAIT IN GRAPHITE” by STEVE WILLIS

The Scotch Plains and Fanwood Arts Association meeting will be held on Thursday, May 15th at 7 p.m. on the lower level of the Scotch Plains Library, 1927 Bartle Avenue, Scotch Plains. A brief business meeting will be followed by a demonstration on how to draw a portrait in graphite.

Steve’s interest in art started when he was very young and he was headed toward a career in art before being pushed toward a business degree. He painted landscapes/seascapes in oil for corporate commission work, before setting his brushes aside for almost 30 years as he completed his education, raised a family and built a business—The Bike Stand in Scotch Plains. Then, his wife Michelle encouraged him to start drawing again. He has worked in graphite, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, and oil, though his current preference is for graphite. He enjoys the starkness and simplicity he can get with that medium and it is something he can do while still spending time with his family.

Steve works primarily from photographs and though he enjoys the challenge of drawing portraits of people, he is also proficient at drawing pets, cars, houses, and anything else he sets his mind to. Steve recently participated in a 3-person art show at the Scotch Plains Library Gallery and has been showing his work in the SPFAA annual show every spring. He has been selling his work locally at shows and through commissions. To see a sample of Steve’s work, please visit his website at: www.thebikestand.com/artwork

The demonstration is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Paula Pearl at (908)322-2590.
